Working from home?

Are you now a telecommuter? Have the recent COVID-19 changes forced you to now work from home? Does your home computer need some help?

I have been helping people who now find themselves working from home get to where they can work from home.

Many times, their home computers just aren’t up to the task. Some times, they would rather leave the home computer for the family and use another computer for work.

Let me give you a couple of options for some great upper middle-class computers. But first, let me also tell you that you should absolutely get a computer with a Solid State Disk (SSD). The speed difference between an SSD and a traditional hard drive is AMAZING!

Lenovo ThinkPad T470 14″ Business Laptop

This laptop has plenty of memory and storage. It is a business-class laptop which in part means that it is durable. It is small and relatively lightweight. The only drawback is that it has a 14-inch screen. Of course, you could always attach a larger monitor via the HDMI port

Lenovo ThinkPad E580 15.6″ Business Laptop

This laptop has plenty of everything you need. With its 15.6-inch screen, your eyes will appreciate your forethought. It has plenty of expandability. If I were in the need for a new Windows laptop, this would be my choice.

Lenovo ThinkCentre M710e SFF Business Desktop

Fast CPU, plenty of RAM and storage, support for multiple monitors…this PC has what you need to get the job done. Couple this with a good monitor (see below) and a good webcam (see that below, too) and you will be ready to attend your online meetings while your kids are running crazy in the background.

ViewSonic VA2359-SMH 23 Inch IPS 1080p Frameless LED Monitor

This monitor is a great monitor at a great price. It is “frameless” which helps if you are putting more than one on the desk. It is IPS (in-lane switching) which means it provides the best color and viewing angles. This monitor will help your eyes not be so tired after a long day at work.

If you plan on using a second monitor with the above PC, you will need a DisplayPort to HDMI cable. Amazon has those, too.

Finally, if you will need to connect your PC to your home network wirelessly, you will need a USB Wireless adapter. My favorite is the TP-Link AC1300 – USB 3.0 Mini WiFi Adapter. It has plenty of speed, plenty of range (unless you had to setup your home office in the garage…contact me for help with that), and is inexpensive.
